For fifteen years there has been an annual lecture delivered commemorating the life of Alicia Johnson, a young woman whose generous spirit was evident in the time and energy she dedicated to the women of the Northern Territory community, as an activist and an advocate.
Alicia was particularly concerned for the welfare of disadvantaged youth, and women who had experienced domestic violence and sexual assault.
She was an active member of the Northern Territory Domestic Violence Task Force, the Northern Territory Law Reform Committee and the Darwin Community Legal Service.
Alicia regularly gave talks to a variety of community groups such as Ruby Gaea Centre against Rape, YWCA and Casey House on topics including domestic violence, sexual assault and youth issues.
She was an extraordinary woman with a great and rare faith in human nature.
The Alicia Johnson Memorial Presentation was originally organised by the Women's Advisory Council. In 2003 the Office of Women’s Policy (OWP) undertook to host the event following the replacement of the advisory council with Community Cabinet Women’s Forums.
The Alicia Johnson Memorial Presentation is now delivered by Tribute to Northern Territory Women nominees as part of International Women's Day celebrations on 8 March.
