Tribute to Northern Territory Women

The Tribute to Northern Territory Women was initiated in 2002 for International Women's Day, to give Territorians the opportunity to recognise, celebrate and commemorate the achievements of outstanding Northern Territory women and their contribution to the economic, social and cultural life of Territorians.

The recipients of the 2009 Tribute to NT Women are:

Bilawarra Lee

2009 Recipient - Bilawara Lee

For her involvement and contribution to the Northern Territory community and improving the lives of Territorians

  • An acknowledged and respected community communicator, healer and teacher of the ancient wisdoms of Aboriginal Spirituality and Healing.

  • For her tireless volunteer work advocating for the rights of all women at the local, national and international level.

  • For her support and commitment towards achieving reconciliation and breaking down barriers between Aboriginal and non Aboriginal people through her cross cultural awareness training.

Catherine (Kate) Warrington Rogers

2009 Recipient - Catherine Warrington-Rogers

For her contribution to the cattle industry in the early 19th Century and an early advocate of gender equality

  • Earned a name for herself among the pioneers as an excellent horsewoman and a crack shot.

  • Was referred to as “the best man in the bush”.

  • Kate single handily managed her own stockyards, mustered cattle, and with the assistance of an Aboriginal workforce drove cattle from the Roper to Camooweal.

  • Kate’s right hand man at Urapunga was an Aboriginal woman by the name of “Princess Polly”.  Together they ran the station, raised kids and established normality on the frontier.

Rosanna Breed

2009 Recipient - Rosanna Breed

For being an inspirational role model and leader through her professionalism and work in a male dominated field

  • For her dedication and continuous support in improving the quality of lives of Territorians

  • A woman who proactively uses her role as a policewoman to improve the relationships between the Aboriginal community and Police.

  • The first Aboriginal woman to reach the rank of Sergeant in the Northern Territory Police Force.

 

Shirley Brown

2009 Recipient - Shirley Brown

For her passion of history that led to her being heavily involved and contributing to the NT community

  • Recognition for her tireless community volunteer work across Central Australia.

  • A passionate historical researcher from Alice Springs who has contributed greatly to our understanding of the challenges faced by pioneers who settled this country.

  • A renowned Centralian Australian historical writer, published author and was instrumental in setting up a small archival group of local people interested in preserving the history of Alice Springs.

  • She became a blood donor before there was a blood bank in Alice Springs

 

Yananymul Mununggurr

2009 Recipient - Yananymul Mununggurr

For the significant challenges, difficulty of achievement, contribution as an inspirational role model and leader

  • A truly inspirational leader and role model for Aboriginal women across Australia, particularly Yolngu women.

  • Overcame traditional challenges in becoming the first Yolgnu woman to hold the top position as Chief Executive Officer of Laynhapuy Homelands Incorporation, which men have traditionally held.

  • In recognition of her leadership she continues to encourage other Yolngu women to reach for the stars and continue educating themselves in order to better service their people
